Police ticket parents for curfew violations

Ann Arbor News    Friday, June 23, 2006

NOTES:

Ypsilanti police ticketed the parents of nine juveniles Thursday night for allowing them to be out after an 11 p.m. city curfew.

The tickets came just hours after Interim Police Chief Matt Harshberger told residents of the Gateway community on the city's south side that police would be cracking down on curfew violations, especially along Harriet Street, where large fights have broken out lately and where police and residents have had trouble with people drinking and using drugs, and causing other problems.

Police ticketed three teens the night before.

A city curfew bans people younger than 17 from being out after 11 p.m. and fines parents and the young person for violations.

Harshberger also told residents Thursday that anyone cited for street crimes along Harriet Street will be placed on conditional bond. If they are found on Harriet after they are released on conditional bond, he said, they will be jailed. Street crimes include weapons violations, drinking and drug violations, fighting and prostitution.
